Doing Business: How to Begin?
How Do I Begin?
You’ll find everything you need to know about City of Park Ridge requirements for opening a business here in the document, Guide to Doing Business in Park Ridge. Every business operating in Park Ridge must obtain a City License through the Environmental Health Division, which issues business licenses and health permits.
Here are some key points to consider:
a. Is the location you have chosen appropriately zoned for the type of business you want to open?
If not, contact the Park Ridge Office of Community Preservation & Development, 847-318-5291 to schedule an appearance before the Planning and Zoning Commission to request a special use permit or a text amendment to the Zoning Ordinance to allow your business in this location.
b. Does the location you have chosen have sufficient parking to comply with the Zoning Ordinance? If you are constructing a new building does your design meet setback requirements?
If the answer to either of these questions is "no," call the City at 847-318-5291 to schedule your appearance before the Zoning Board of Appeals.
c. Will you need to remodel the space?
If so, call the City to obtain a Building Permit. Decorating projects such as painting, carpeting, or replacing plumbing or electrical fixtures do not require a Building Permit.
d. Will you need to construct a new building or an addition to an existing building?
If so, do the following in this order:
-- call the City to schedule a site plan review by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
--Upon approval, call the City to schedule an appearance with your complete plans in hand to obtain approval from the Appearance Commission. You may bring your architect, contractor, or others to assist you.
--Once your plan, with or without modifications, receives approval from the Appearance Commission, contact the City for a Building Permit.
e. Are you planning to open a restaurant?
Contact the City to have your site plan reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission.
f. Is your business regulated by the Health Authority?
If so, contact the City for information required for a Health Review and submit this information with your Building Permit Application. After completion, the Health Authority will inspect your establishment before issuing a Health Permit or Business License.
g. Does your business include the sale of alcoholic beverages?
If so, contact the City for information on how to obtain a Liquor License.
h. Will you be installing a sign to advertise your business?
If so, contact the City to schedule presenting your proposed sign to the Appearance Commission. Upon approval, contact the City to apply for a Building Permit to erect your sign.
i. Will you be installing an alarm system?
If so, register your alarm with the Police Department.
