City Council Passes Resolution Opposing HB 5485 - Fire Department Manning
Mayor Schmidt drafted a Resolution opposing HB 5485 that was approved favorably by the City Council on May 5, 2014 with a vote of 6-1. House Bill 5485, which addresses Fire Department manning, is currently pending in the State Senate.
In the Mayor's opinion, this bill was pushed through the State House by the firefighter's union and their allies who received political contributions from the union. The bill would force negotiations between the municipality and the union to decide on staffing of its fire department, potentially placing the decision regarding staffing levels of its department in the hands of unelected arbitrators.
According to Mayor Schmidt, "This is a bad bill which should not be allowed to become law. Marty Moylan and Michael McAuliffe, the two state representatives who represent most of Park Ridge, voted in favor of the bill in the House. Their votes were especially disappointing since the bill only passed in the House by three votes."
What can you do? There is still time for you to contact your state senator urging them to vote against HB5485 and prevent it from becoming law. Senator Dan Kotowski's e-mail address is email@example.com. Senator John Mulroe's e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
The rough dividing line is Busse Highway extending east along Touhy. If you live south of Busse, you are most likely in Senator Kotowski's district. Residents who live north of Busse and are also north of Touhy are most likely represented by Senator Mulroe.
Of course, feel free to contact both of them.
