Free 18 inch potted Oak Sapling offer

In 2016, the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) launched a new program called Restore the Canopy, Plant a Tree.  The program was designed to help replenish the tree canopy in Cook County and mitigate flooding.  The region’s tree canopy has been decimated by the Emerald Ash Borer and severe weather.

Just recently, Mayor Maloney has received many inquiries from residents about the tree sapling program.  If you would like to receive a free, pre-potted 18” oak sapling, please call 847/318-5226 before May 25 providing the following information:  Your name, Email address, Day time phone number and the number of saplings you wish to receive.  You will be notified by email when the trees have been delivered to the Public Works Service Center at 400 Busse Highway.  You will be responsible for picking up your sapling(s) within one-week of notification, most likely the first week of June.  Community groups and schools are welcome to participate.

Before ordering your sapling, you should give thought to where the tree will be planted.   Consider the amount of space your new tree will need to grow, both above the ground for canopy and below for its roots.  It is recommended that large shade trees should be planted 20’-25’ from buildings, at least 30’ from overhead utility lines and neighboring trees, and 5’ from fences.  These saplings cannot be planted as parkway trees.
