FREE Drug Disposal Kits are Available at the Park Ridge Police Department

Park Ridge Police department in conjunction with the Park Ridge Health Commission and MYCAF have joined together to fight the Opioid Epidemic affecting thousands of people each day.  As they join together, calling themselves the Opioid Advisory Group, they brainstorm ways to reach the community with opportunities to eliminate the stigma surrounding addiction and engage community members so education, prevention and treatment options are available.  “According to the federal government, more than 2,000 teenagers will misuse a prescription drug for the first time today, tomorrow and the day after that. Many of these first time encounters with opioids happen in homes with leftover medications that were initially prescribed by a physician (”.

The Advisory Group has partnered with Addiction Policy Forum, an organization based in Washington D.C, to bring awareness in our community regarding prescription drug disposal.  Addiction Policy Forum has provided Park Ridge Police Department with 200 Rx disposal kits that they will begin to distribute this Friday, March 9, 2018 in an effort to educate the public about the risks of holding onto unused medications.  The distribution is deliberately coinciding with daylight savings time in hopes that one day soon, Rx disposal will become a biannual ritual like replacing fire alarm batteries and adjusting your clocks. “Developing our relationship with the Addiction Policy Forum has been an exciting honor.  The opportunity to share the Rx disposal kits free of charge and spread the word on addiction prevention can save lives (Geri Silic, Park Ridge Police Social Worker)”
