When Building Permits are Necessary

With the recent impacts due to flooding we are reminding residents that building permits are necessary for replacing water heaters and furnaces. These permits can be issued over the counter at the Community Preservation and Development Department on the 2nd floor of City Hall. Please refer to Municipal Code Article 15-1-6: Building Permits, for a listing of when a permit is required.

Permits may also be required for changes to a property’s grade, modifications to sump pumps or other control measures that may be considered by residents. Please contact the City’s Building Safety Division at (847) 847-5292 should you have a question on building permits.

In emergency situations like this year’s flood, fraud exists, but you can protect yourself. Be aware of scam artists and contractors not licensed for work in the City. To determine if a contractor is licensed with the City contact the Building Safety Division. Always get at least three proposals in writing and check references.
