Park Ridge Fire Department Responds to Weekend Fires
On Saturday March 11th, 2017 at 11:34 a.m. the Park Ridge Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at 513 N. Broadway Ave. PRFD companies arrived at the scene in less than four minutes from the time of the 9-1-1 call and found a detached 2 ½ car garage with heavy smoke showing from the front and fire from the rear. Upon arrival, crews stretched hoselines to the rear garage and began fire attack. The bulk of the fire was extinguished within minutes of arrival, and at that time a second fire was reported in Park Ridge.
The second fire was reported at 11:44 a.m. by multiple callers as a bathroom fire in a home on the 1000 block of West Crescent Ave. Since all PRFD companies were committed to the fire on Broadway, mutual aid companies from neighboring communities were immediately dispatched to this second fire. Upon arrival of fire companies, several occupants were outside of the home reporting that they believed the fire to be out. Crews were able to determine that the fire was indeed extinguished and the fire had not spread beyond the bathroom. Through the use of thermal imaging cameras, the interior walls of the home were checked for heat in order to rule out further fire extension.
Both fires have been classified as accidental. The fire on Broadway was due to embers from a wood burning stove spreading to the garage and resulted in a total fire loss of approximately $5,000. The fire on Crescent was caused by an unattended candle, which ignited nearby combustibles. The total fire loss is estimated at $1,000.
