Release of 2014 Crime Statistics Highlights a Steady Decline in Crime for Park Ridge

This news came as the department announced the crime statistics for 2014. The overall crime rate for Park Ridge was lower this year by almost 5% and the lowest in five years. The Index crime rate indicates the prevalence of crime occurring across a given population. It is generally defined as the total number of index crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. In 2014, the crime rate in Park Ridge was 1237.9. As a comparison, based on the latest publication of Crime in Illinois 2013, the crime rate for the State of Illinois was 2650.5 and 3471.2 for the County of Cook.  Park Ridge has experienced a 23% decrease in the crime rate since 2010.

The total number of individual crimes has declined as well. In 2014, the total overall number of crimes decreased by 1.4% as compared to 2013. Additionally, the crime totals have decreased by 35.3% as compared to 2010. The crime statistics indicate a number of significant findings. First, property crime offenses, which  include Burglary, Theft (including Burglary from a Motor Vehicle), Motor Vehicle Theft and Arson have shown a downward trend with a 4.4% decrease since 2013 and a 23.1% decrease since 2010. Property Crime Offenses, or Crimes against Property, accounted for 97.4% of the crime index total in 2014.  In addition, violent crime offenses, or crimes against persons, which include Criminal Homicide, Forcible Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault/Battery have also shown a downward trend with a 20.0% decrease since 2013 and a 25.1% decrease since 2010.

“I am extremely proud of the men and women of the Park Ridge Police Department for their dedication and service” remarked Chief Frank Kaminski. “To see crime rates going down, steadily, year after year since 2010 is a sign that we are making sustained progress”, he added. One of the notable areas of improvement is burglaries. The Burglary Crime Index Offense Rate has decreased by 20.2% in 2014 from 2013, and is 43.2% lower than it was in 2010. “This is a trend we like to see”, stated Chief Kaminski. “Our officers know the emotional and financial impact burglaries can have on victims so it is rewarding to see that we are making an appreciable difference in this area”.  Chief Kaminski identified the department’s enhanced collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and the participation in regional task forces key factors in the decrease.

The Theft Crime Index Offense Rate has increased slightly by 1.1% in 2014 from 2013; however it has decreased by 15.1% since 2010. “The theft rate has been fairly stable throughout the years”, stated Chief Kaminski. He added, “This is, in large part, due to burglaries to unlocked vehicles. The department plans to focus on this area in the upcoming year”.

The Park Ridge Police Department remains committed to improving the safety and well being of all who live in or visit our community. “This information really affirms what the department is doing. It shows that a lot of our programs, including our P.A.C.T. (Police and Community Together), Beat Team Leader and our community policing philosophy have moved us forward” Chief Kaminski stated. “It also demonstrates, loud and clear, that our partnership with the community is making it a safer place to live, work and raise a family. We all have a role in creating a safe Park Ridge.”
