Release of 2017 Crime Statistics Highlights a Continued Decline in Overall Crime for Park Ridge

The decline in overall crime for the City continued in 2017.  The overall crime rate for Park Ridge was lower this year, as compared to last, by 24.4%.  The Index Crime Rate indicates the prevalence of crime occurring across a given population.  It is generally defined as the total number of index crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.  As a comparison, based on the most recent available publication of Crime in Illinois (2016) , the crime rate for the State of Illinois for 2016 was 2406.9, and 3209.2 for Cook County.  In 2017, the crime rate for Park Ridge decreased to 787.1 as compared to 1040.6 in 2016.  This is a five year low.  The five-year comparison indicates that the Crime Rate in 2017 was 39.5% lower than in 2013!

           In 2017, Property Crime Offenses were the lowest it has been in 5 years.  Property Crime Offenses include Burglary, Theft (including Burglary from a Motor Vehicle), Motor Vehicle Theft and Arson. 

  • Property Crime Offenses, or Crimes against Property, accounted for 94.9% of the crime index total in 2017.
  • Property Crime Offenses have shown a downward trend with 25.9% decrease since 2016 and an 40.8% decrease since 2013.  Motor vehicle Theft and Arson continue to account for the smallest percentage of the overall crimes against property crime index offense total.
  • The Burglary Crime Index Offense Rate has decreased by almost 15% in 2017 from 2016.  It is 42.4% lower than it was in 2013 and is the lowest it has been in five years.
  • The Theft Crime Index Offense Rate has decreased by almost 28% in 2017 from 2016, and has decreased by 41.3% since 2013.  It is also the lowest it has been in five years.
  • In 2017, the total overall crimes decreased by almost 20% as compared to 2016.  Additionally, the overall crime totals have decreased by 34.9% as compared to 2013, and are the lowest they have been in five years.
  • Traffic accidents have decreased by just under 10% in 2017 as compared to 2016 and they are the lowest they have been in five years.

The Park Ridge Police Department remains committed to improving the safety and well-being of all who live in or visit our community.  It is important that we do not become complacent and residents should always remember to make sure they lock their car doors, close their garages and remain vigilant as they go about their day.
