Resolution Opposing House Bill 5485 Prepared by Mayor Schmidt
April 18, 2014 02:56 PM
Mayor Schmidt will be presenting a Resolution that he has drafted and the City Council will be debating on Monday evening involving House Bill 5485 which is now pending in the State Senate. The power of determining fire department staffing levels would be taken away from city government and placed in the hands of the firefighters union and unelected arbitrators. Mayor Schmidt believes that the net result could very well be that the City would be required to hire firefighters which it either does not need or cannot afford, or both. This could lead to an increase in property taxes and / or service cuts and layoffs in the police department and other departments.
State Senators John Mulroe and Dan Kotowski have both been invited to attend the City Council meeting Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. on April 21. Senator Mulroe has informed us that he will attend and we hope that Senator Kotowski will attend as well.
Mayor Schmidt invites you to read the resolution and voice your opinion to your respective state senator.
