Structure Fire - 100 Block of Wisner

On Tuesday September 25, 2012 at approximately 4:34 p.m., the Park Ridge Fire Department responded to the report of a fire on the roof of a house in the 100 block of North Wisner Street in Park Ridge. The first Fire Department units were the scene in five minutes and reported heavy smoke and moderate amount of fire emanating from the roof of the structure. Roofers were present on the scene and were in immediate danger, requiring rescue by firefighters through the use of ground ladders. The lone occupant of the home had already evacuated the residence prior to our arrival.

Park Ridge Fire companies immediately began an aggressive interior fire attack, stretching hose lines to the second floor and pulling ceiling on the second floor to expose the attic area. Heavy fire was found extending throughout the attic. As additional Park Ridge Fire units arrived on scene, along with units from the North Maine Fire Protection District and Niles Fire Department, fire companies continued to attack the heavy fire in the attic and open ceiling areas on the second floor. A greater portion of the ceiling and soffit was pulled to expose the entire area. As the fire intensified, fire crews were removed from the interior due to reports of roof collapse. The fire was extinguished using a combination of a master stream device from the Tower Ladder, along with hoselines. The main body of fire was extinguished within forty minutes of arrival, although fire crews remained on the scene for over two hours conducting salvage and overhaul operations and extinguishing deep seated spot fires in the attic and walls.

Park Ridge Fire Investigators are currently on the scene conducting a full investigation into the cause of the fire. Damage estimates have not yet been determined. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians as a result of this fire; the pet dog of the homeowner was found unharmed on the first floor and reunited with the owner.

The Park Ridge Fire Department was assisted on the scene by units from the North Maine Fire Protection District, Niles Fire Department, Morton Grove Fire Department, Elk Grove Fire Department, Buffalo Grove Fire Department, Skokie Fire Department, Lincolnwood Fire Department, Norwood Park Fire Protection District, Des Plaines Fire Department, Mount Prospect Fire Department, Winnetka Fire Department and Rosemont Fire Department.

Other units filled in at Park Ridge fire stations during this incident from the Schiller Park, Glenview, Wheeling and Rosemont Fire Departments.
