                               ;                  Cold Weather Tips

  • Never use your oven or burners on your stove for heat.
  • Never bring gas or bbq grills indoors to heat your home.
  • Make sure portable heaters are unplugged when not in use.
  • Use electrical space heaters with caution.  Do not place them near curtains or other flammable materials.  Turn them off before retiring to bed.
  • Do not use generators in your home, garage or crawl space
  • Keep heat at adequate levels and leave faucets open with a slight drip to prevent pipes from freezing
  • Dress in layers, both indoors and outdoors
  • Wear mittens instead of gloves and cover your head, face, and mouth
  • Keep active. Make a list of exercises and activities to do indoors when you can’t get out
  • Check on elderly neighbors
  • Take advantage of warming shelters, theatres, or shopping malls
  • Eat high energy foods, warm liquids, avoiding alcoholic beverages
  • Keep your car’s gas tank filled and maintain an emergency kit in your car
  • Never leave your car running in an enclosed or partially enclosed area.
  • Eat well and drink 10 glasses of water daily; stock up on non-perishable food supplies, just in case.
  • Keep extra medications in the house. If this is not possible, make arrangements to have someone pick up and deliver your medications.
  • Do not exert yourself outdoors.  The strain from the cold and hard labor could cause a heart attack; sweating can lead to a chill and even hypothermia
  • Keep pets indoors or ensure they have a warm shelter area with unfrozen food and water. Check frequently on any animal that remains outside.
