City Meets With Union Pacific Railroad to Address Bridge Repairs
March 24, 2014 01:22 PM
Mayor David Schmidt and city staff met with officials from Union Pacific and METRA who agreed to begin work on reconstructing the portion of the Touhy Avenue viaduct which has been the source of falling debris. Mayor Schmidt explained, “As my non-engineering mind understands it, METRA will demolish the east walkway above Touhy, take off the wooden boards and pour new concrete. The steel brackets which hold the concrete in place may also be replaced. Additionally, work will be done on the stairwell and the iron railings which are also in a state of great disrepair. METRA and UP are sensitive to the artistic and historic nature of that section and will do their best to preserve its historic integrity. The project will take place over a period of a few months and may occasionally require periodic partial or complete closures of Touhy, most likely at night.”
Mayor Schmidt extends thanks to Union Pacific and METRA for responding to Park Ridge’s concern.
