A message from Mayor Schmidt

November 10, 2014 02:11 PM

First, I want to congratulate the voters of Park Ridge who showed up at the polls last week.  According to the Board of Elections website, the City's 59% turnout was the highest in Cook County.  All things being considered, that is a very good showing.  Well done.

Next, the City has been notified that the Touhy Avenue viaduct repairs will be underway very shortly. The holdup for several months had been a communications issue between the contractor and the Illinois Department of Transportation regarding lane closures.  We now know that Touhy will be down to one lane in each direction and that Busse Highway will be closed at Touhy Avenue.  Since Meacham has been closed for a few years and Cumberland does not go through north of Touhy, that will pose some "interesting" and aggravating challenges for people trying to get around.  I suggest you start experimenting now with alternate routes.

Lastly, November is property tax levy month and discussions on next year's levy will begin in earnest tonight at the City Council's Committee of the Whole meeting.  With the success of the Library referendum, increased pension obligations, labor union contract issues and the monster Uptown TIF debt for which back-ended principal payments are finally becoming due, this will be by far the most challenging time that the Council and I have faced in keeping the levy increased to a reasonably low level.  We may have no choice but to make severe cuts in spending similar to those made around  2008-09 when several spending programs were discontinued and about 20 employees were let go.

Remember the meetings are open to the public and will be broadcast live on WOW cable and available to view on the City's website, usually the next day.
