Board and Commission volunteers needed - deadline extended

July 19, 2018 08:37 AM

Thank you for your interest in serving the City of Park Ridge.  Many times it has been said that the volunteers are the backbone of our community.  The City is extremely grateful for those who have chosen  to serve.

The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is a seven-member board with the responsibility of hearing requests for variations. The ZBA has authority to approve certain variances in cases of hardship (authorized variance), while others must be approved by the City Council, after a determination is  made by the ZBA (unauthorized variance).  There is one vacancy;  the individual appointed will serve through 12/31/2020.

The Historic Preservation Commission consists of nine citizen members, with a range of expertise in law, real estate, architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, city planning, anthropology, history, art, building construction or finance. The Commission serves to preserve, enhance and restore for use those properties and areas that have special historical, architectural, community or aesthetic significance in the community, in the interest of promoting the public health, safety and general welfare of Park Ridge. The Commission is primarily charged with making recommendations to the City Council for the designation of historic landmarks and historic districts within the City. The Commission also issues Certificates of Appropriateness for construction projects related to historic preservation.  There is one vacant position.  The term of service is five years.

Interested individuals should complete an application for Boards & Commissions and return it to Deputy Clerk Peterson by 8 am July 30.  You will be contacted by the City to come in for a brief 10-15 minute interview on a Monday evening to meet with the Mayor's Advisory Board.  If recommended for appointment, you will be required to complete a non-fingerprint type background check, as required by Municipal Code.

For more information, please search the website for "Boards and Commissions."

Looking ahead:  In August, the City will begin accepting applications for the Community Health Commission (3) and the Planning and Zoning Commission (2).  A news release with details will be provided at that time.
