Fire Department responds to 116 South Merrill

December 19, 2019 01:57 PM

On Wednesday December 18, 2019 at 8:12 p.m., the Park Ridge Fire Department was dispatched to a call for a possible house fire at a home located at 116 S. Merrill Street. Upon arrival at 8:16 p.m., crews saw smoke and embers discharging from the top of the chimney. Companies were sent to the interior of the home and the roof to try to extinguish the fire in the chimney and check for extension. Smoke began to increase and push out from the eaves and interior crews found the fire had spread to the attic. PRFD crews opened a ventilation hole on the roof while interior crews were able to extinguish the fire in the attic before it spread to any other area of the home.

Mutual aid crews were sent into the home to assist the interior fire attack and to perform salvage operations to protect the contents of the home from further damage. No residents or fire personnel were injured in this incident. PRFD fire investigators have ruled the fire accidental in nature with an approximate fire loss of $150,000.

The Park Ridge Fire Department was assisted on scene by crews from the Niles, Des Plaines, and Morton Grove Fire Departments. Fire crews from Elk Grove, Wheeling, Rosemont and Schiller Park responded to the Park Ridge fire stations to provide coverage while PRFD crews were committed to the fire.

We would like to take this time to remind all residents how important it is to have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned by a licensed professional on an annual basis to ensure safe operation during the winter season.
