Save time and energy; Mulch your leaves

Those shade providing trees are great in the summer.  But come fall, they shower you with an abundance of falling leaves. Did you know that residents or landscape contractors are prohibited from raking or blowing leaves into the street? According to City Ordinances 9-3-2 and 14-15-15, you could be fined $50 to $100.

But there is a great alternative.  According to a study conducted at Michigan State University, you can forget about raking, blowing, and bagging leaves.  Instead, just mulch them with your lawn mower.  Doing so will save you time and energy and as a result, add nutrients to your lawn and soil.

Simply use the mulcher on your lawn-mower instead of the grass bag.  Mow over the leaves so that the remaining pieces are smaller than a dime.  This may take several passes with the mower depending on the amount of leaves. When done mulching, mow over your lawn once again using your bag attachment leaving at least one inch of grass is visible through the mulched leaf layer. Once the leaf bits settle into your lawn, microbes and worms get to work recycling them.   Use the mulch collected in your mower bag and spread in your garden as an insulation blanket for perennials or as a useful addition to your compost pile.  In spring, you will notice that the layer of leaves has vanished and that you are reaping the reward of a greener lawn.
