Park Ridge Fire Department Responds to Fire at 2300 Windsor Mall

On Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 2:38 p.m., the Park Ridge Fire Department (PRFD) was dispatched to 2300 Windsor Mall for an activated fire alarm.  Upon arrival, the Incident Commander was notified by a resident of a fire in her unit on the first floor. The Incident Commander upgraded the fire response to a Code 4, which calls for additional mutual aid fire department resources to be dispatched to the scene, and also provides for backup coverage at both PRFD stations. PRFD crews arrived on the scene within four (4) minutes and stretched a hose line to the unit on fire. They encountered heavy smoke from the floor to the ceiling and were able to use their thermal imaging cameras to locate the seat of the fire in the kitchen.

Crews were able to stop the fire in the kitchen before it could spread to the rest of the unit.
Once the fire was out, Park Ridge and mutual aid companies checked for any fire extension in the building and worked to ventilate the smoke out of the unit and the rest of the building.

There were no injuries to any residents or fire personnel. The building’s fire alarm system worked effectively to alert the residents to the fire so they could all safely evacuate from the building. Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was accidental and appears to have started in the dishwasher. Damage in the unit is estimated to be less than $25,000.

Mutual aid assistance was provided at the fire by the Rosemont and Norwood Park Fire Departments. Engine and ambulance companies from the Glenview, Elk Grove, Rosemont and Wheeling Fire Departments responded to staff the Park Ridge fire stations during this incident to ensure quick response to any other emergency calls while PRFD crews were committed.
