Park Ridge Police Are Investigating a Robbery and Shooting - Updated

On February 3, 2017, at approximately 3:15 am, Park Ridge Police were advised by Chicago Police that a male, 21 year old gunshot victim presented himself at an area hospital. The victim had a gunshot wound to the neck which, at this time, does not appear life threatening. An initial investigation between Park Ridge Police, Chicago Police and the Illinois State Police determined that the shooting occurred during a robbery attempt in the 1400 block of W. Higgins Road. Once the jurisdiction of the incident was determined, Park Ridge Police coordinated the investigation. The victim relates that he, and a 21 year old male acquaintance, were stopped at the traffic light in the 1400 block of W. Higgins Road when a man approached the passenger side and demanded money. The victim stated that he then realized he had been shot. The suspect fled and the victim was driven to an area hospital by the acquaintance. The hospital was not equipped to treat the victim and he was then taken by private ambulance to another area hospital to receive treatment. The victim and witness were unable to provide a vehicle description for the suspect and only were able to relate that the suspect was a male. Detectives from the Park Ridge Police are in the early stages of the investigation.

Update #1

Based on forensic evidence and revised statements from those involved, investigators are now working under the premise that gunshot injury was the result of an accidental discharge inside the vehicle and that the initial reports of a robbery are unfounded. The investigation continues at this time.
