Park Ridge Police Arrest Juvenile in Auto Theft

On March 23, 2016 at approximately 6:50 p.m. Park Ridge Police responded to 901 Touhy Avenue for the report of a stolen vehicle. Responding officers learned from the victims that they had parked their vehicle in the lot, leaving an 88 year old female family member in the rear seat, and entered the store to make a quick purchase. Upon exiting the store, they observed that the vehicle and the woman were gone. They immediately notified police. Officers immediately issued a flash message to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Based on several motor vehicle theft arrests last week, Park Ridge Police Investigators worked several leads. One of those leads took them to the area of Belmont and Harlem in Chicago. While in the area, investigators observed the stolen vehicle. Park Ridge Police Investigators, driving an unmarked squad car, maintained surveillance on the vehicle and sought assistance from area police departments to stop the vehicle with marked squads. Ultimately, officers from the Chicago Police Department assisted investigators in stopping the vehicle without incident in the 4800 Block of N. Austin.  A 14 year old, male subject was taken into custody.

Officers learned that the victim was not in the vehicle and that the suspect had dropped the victim at her home.

Park Ridge Police Detectives are continuing their investigation and are consulting with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

            Charges are pending.

Additionally, a Park Ridge Police Officer was involved in a minor crash with another vehicle, several blocks from the traffic stop, while responding to the area to assist detectives. The crash was investigated by the Chicago Police Department and the driver of the other vehicle involved, was cited for Failure to Yield to and Emergency Vehicle. The officer was transported to Resurrection Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A passenger from the second vehicle was also transported with non-life threatening injuries.

UPDATE 3/24/2016  9:00 am

Park Ridge Police continue to work through this investigation this morning. The 14 year old suspect was transferred into the custody of the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center overnight. Detectives are coordinating the investigation with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and are in the process of filing one charge of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking against the suspect.

The Park Ridge Police Department is pleased with the swift and positive resolution of this case. The victim was located, unharmed, shortly into the investigation due to the excellent investigative work by detectives and our partnership and teamwork with the Chicago Police Department.

The officer injured in the crash while responding to assist detectives sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital. The passenger, also involved in that crash suffered minor injuries and was released. The Chicago Police Department investigated the crash. The department will conduct a routine, administrative review of the  crash as it does with all officer involved motor vehicle crashes.
