Park Ridge Police Arrest Suspects in Area Restaurant Pickpocketing Thefts

On Feb. 11, 2016 Park Ridge Police arrested two suspects who are believed to be responsible for a rash of recent pickpocketing thefts in an area restaurant.

At approximately 11:42 a.m., officers responded to a restaurant in the 0-100 block of S. Northwest Highway for the report of a theft. Responding officers learned from witnesses that a suspect had reached into the purse of a victim, had possibly removed a wallet and then fled the scene with a potential accomplice. As officers were investigating, detectives from the Park Ridge Police Department responded, based on knowledge from previous thefts,  to a retail store in Niles to check for the suspects. Upon arrival, detectives observed two individuals who matched the description of the suspects, making a purchase with a credit card which was later determined to belong to the victim of the above theft. The suspects were taken into custody and detectives learned that the first suspect, Keith Johnson (DOB 6/29/1966 of the 1200 block of West 74th Street in Chicago) had made a $600 purchase using the victim’s credit card. Upon further investigation, detectives discovered that the second suspect, Tammy Demiles (DOB 7/2/1974 of the 8700 block of South Sangamon Street in Chicago) had just used the victim’s credit card to make a $2000.00 purchase. In addition, detectives were able to connect Demiles to a theft at the same restaurant which occurred on Jan. 17, 2016. In that case, Demiles is alleged to have used the victim’s credit card to facilitate a $1,600 purchase at the same retail store where she was taken into custody on Feb. 11, 2016.

After consulting with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Johnson was charged with one count of Identity Theft (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of Credit Cards (Class 4 Felony).  Demiles was charged with one count of Identity Theft (Class 2 Felony), one count of Identity Theft (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of Credit Cards (Class 3 Felony).

This case serves to demonstrate the successful partnerships that law enforcement and the public can have.  These cases would not have had successful resolutions if it were not for the alert employee who notified the police and for the detectives who connected the dots between recent incidents.

Both suspects are awaiting bond hearings.
