Park Ridge Police Awarded Third Place in Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge

The National Law Enforcement Challenge and Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge are safety awards programs which recognize law enforcement agencies throughout the nation and Illinois for their accomplishments in promoting traffic safety in their communities.  The Illinois program, sponsored in part by the Illinois Department of Transportation – Division of Traffic Safety, is coordinated by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and is open to all Illinois law enforcement agencies.  The national program is coordinated by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and financed by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and open to all US agencies.
The Traffic Safety Challenge program is a friendly year-long competition among local, county and state law enforcement agencies. Applications are grouped into categories based on agency type and number of police officers. Entries are judged by a team of nationally recognized traffic safety experts and law enforcement professionals.

Each entry is judged on the basis of policies, training, public information/education, enforcement activity and effectiveness in the areas of occupant protection/safety belt use, impaired driving and speed control. Winning programs combine public information and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries.
The Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge program allows law enforcement agencies to set comprehensive goals, to strive to reach new heights in traffic safety, to share their experiences with others, and to be recognized for their traffic safety accomplishments; in short, to make a difference in the communities their officers serve each day.
In the 2013 Illinois Challenge, Park Ridge won 3rd place in its size category. As part of the award, the department received a LIDAR (Radar) unit valued at approximately $1400. The Park Ridge Police Department has been actively participating in the Illinois and National Traffic Safety Challenge since 2005. Over that time the department has been recognized many times at the State and National level for our traffic safety programs.  Awards include the Clayton J. Hall Memorial Award (2005) for the most comprehensive traffic safety program in the Nation among all entries.

In addition, the Park Ridge Police Department demonstrated our commitment to traffic safety once again on Friday, August 30, 2013 when we partnered with Niles Police and conducted a roadside safety check. This check was funded by a grant through the Illinois Department of Transportation. Officers issued 5 citations for occupant restraint, 4 citations for unlicensed driving, 11 insurance citations and 5 other citations.
