Restricting Youth Access is the Key to Breaking the Cycle of Smoking

December 28, 2018 12:05 PM

In an effort to address this issue, Park Ridge Police Investigators conducted tobacco compliance inspections on December 17th, 2018. Investigators enlisted the help of volunteers under the age of 18 to attempt to purchase tobacco products in a controlled buy. These controlled buy attempts were made at every store in Park Ridge where tobacco is being sold. As a result 14 compliance checks were conducted and 13 were found to be in compliance. One establishment, 7-Eleven located at 976 N. Northwest Hwy. sold cigarettes to a minor during the compliance check. The clerk was cited under local ordinance for Prohibited Sale of Tobacco to a Minor.

Additionally, the Park Ridge City Council recently voted to amend the current city ordinance to increase the minimum age for the purchase and sale of tobacco products and electronic smoking devices from 18 to 21 years of age. The ordinance will go into effect on February 1st, 2019.
