Second Ward Interview Committee makes its recommendation

In mid-May, the City had learned that Ald. Milissis was moving to another suburb and would be retiring from the City Council and vacating his elected position as Second Ward Alderman.   He attended his last City Council meeting on June 3, 2019.   He was sworn into office as Second Ward Alderman in May, 2013; his second term would have ended at the end of April, 2021.

Mayor Maloney publicly encouraged residents living in the Second Ward who had a desire to serve as Alderman to contact him with a letter of intent.  According to State statute, he had 60 days in which to appoint a replacement.  The Mayor also looked for volunteers who were interested in serving on the interview committee.   As stated at the recent July 11 meeting, he was humbled by the number of responses from those volunteering to serve.

A total of seven (7) residents submitted their resumes to the Mayor and were interested in serving as Alderman of the Second Ward.  Those persons included Sandra Deines, Kevin Duffy, C. Richard Farmer, Brian Bozek, Daniel Johnston, and Maureen Hartwig.   Dienes and Duffy withdrew their applications for various reasons.  A total of seven residents volunteered to serve on the interview committee.  Those persons included Dennis Sladky, George Korovilas, Tom Farinella, Katie Melcher, Chari Hanley, Dean Parisi, and Sandy Deines.  Korovilas was unable to attend the interviews on the selected dates and withdrew his name.

Interviews were held on June 24 and July 11 at City Hall in the Council Chambers.  Mayor Maloney provided the candidates with a variety of questions that were used during each thirty (30) minute interview session of all four candidates.  Both interview sessions were televised live.  They have since been made available on the City's website.  On July 11, after the final interview, the committee deliberated.  Mayor Maloney recognized all the candidates for their participation and willingness to serve the community.  In his opinion, all four (4) of the candidates were well qualified, had a unique perspective, and would serve the residents well.

Each person on the interview committee presented their top two candidate selections to Mayor Maloney and explained the strengths they believe were exhibited by the candidates.  Maureen Hartwig was the majority favorite (5/1) for reasons including her preparedness for the interview, her involvement in the community, and her knowledge and understanding of issues facing the City and the Second Ward.

On Monday, July 15, 2019, Hartwig will be presented to the City Council at its regular meeting as Mayor Maloney’s recommendation for appointment as the Second Ward Alderman.  The City Council will be required to vote, accepting the Mayor’s recommendation.  If approved, she will be administered the Oath of Office as Second Ward Alderman, take her seat at the dais, serving the City as Second Ward Alderman Hartwig.  This term will run until the April 2021 elections.
